US II VOCAB – SEPTEMBER

Segregation the practice or policy of creating separate facilities within the same society for the use of a minority group

Affirm to agree or support as when a higher court agrees with the earlier decision of a lower court

Jim Crow Laws state law introduced in the south after reconstruction to give official support to segregation

Supreme Court The federal Supreme Court (“the” Supreme Court) has the final word on interpretation of all laws and of the Constitution itself

Separate-but-equal The doctrine that racial segregation is constitutional as long as the facilities provided for blacks and whites are roughly equal

Discrimination treatment or consideration of, or making a distinction in favor of or against, a person or thing based on the group, class, or category to which that person or thing belongs rather than on individual merit: racial and religious intolerance and discrimination.

Poll tax – annual tax required to qualify to vote

Grandfather clause (1867) – Any person, their father, or grandfather who was previously allowed to vote had their voting rights reinstated

Debt peonage – workers forced into slavery to pay off debt to employer

SHOULD TEACHERS CARRY GUNS

Texas Governor Rick Perry affirmed his commitment to the Second Amendment by encouraging allowing all teachers in the state to carry guns on campus at a Tea Party event Monday.

 “In the state of Texas, with our concealed handgun license, if you have been duly backgrounded and trained and you are a concealed handgun license carrying individual, you should be able to carry your handgun anywhere in this state.”

WHAT’S TO BLAME

Former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee (R) weighed in on the massacre at an elementary school in Newtown, Conn. on Friday, saying the crime was no surprise because we have “systematically removed God” from public schools.

“We ask why there is violence in our schools, but we have systematically removed God from our schools,” Huckabee said on Fox News. “Should we be so surprised that schools would become a place of carnage?”
